| Local artist showcases 'Landscapes for the Seasons'
Oil painter Averill Haines offers a collection of "Landscapes for the Senses" in an exhibit this spring at The Provident Bank off Route 1 in Seabrook. A member of the Newburyport and Seacoast art associations, Haines' paintings are inspired by her surrounding environment and love of nature. "My childhood years were spent in the picturesque Finger Lakes region of western New York state and the seacoast communities of southern Maine," says Haines, who lived in Seabrook before recently moving to Newburyport. "These areas of pastoral surroundings afforded me an early appreciation of nature's beauty and serenity." Haines is donating 10 percent of the proceeds from the sale of artwork during the show to the Merrimack River Feline Rescue Society in Salisbury and the Seacoast Association Feline Education & Rescue in New Hampshire.
How Jaci Rae Learned the Value of a Dollar - The Early Years
My life has been anything but ordinary. I began life impoverished, but with poverty came a street knowledge that I might not have found otherwise. It is because of my early years that I came to learn how to get something for free or next to it. Even though my story is quite different today, I still use these same strategies to save money and get the most bang for my buck. I have been to the depths of financially disparity and I don't want anyone to have to suffer the same. I know what it's like and I have been there pinching pennies since I was very young. As my Grandmother always used to say, when she sat me on her lap to read me a story, "It's always best to start at the beginning." The beginning for me is my early years and how I learned at a very young age the value of a dollar.
Tony Stewart Considers Phoenix his Western Home
The sand that blows around Phoenix International Raceway and the surrounding desert is a familiar sight to Tony Stewart, driver of the No. 20 Home Depot Chevrolet for Joe Gibbs Racing in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series.Stewart considers Phoenix to be his West Coast home away from home. He has raced at the 1-mile oval in six different types of race cars - USAC Midgets, USAC Silver Crown cars, Indy cars, Supermodifieds, a NASCAR Busch Series car and a Nextel Cup car. But it was his performance in a USAC Silver Crown car in February 1993 at Phoenix - his first race ever at the desert mile - that turned heads and had team owners in the IRL IndyCar Series and in NASCAR asking, “Who is this kid?" It was the famed Copper World Classic and the season-opener for USAC's Silver Crown division. Stewart qualified second to Davey Hamilton - a former IRL veteran - and led 31 of the 50 laps before finishing second to Mike Bliss - the 2003 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series champion.
Having faith in women
Chicken Little was wrong. The sky isn't falling, but the glass ceiling appears to be. In February, Harvard announced the appointment of its first female president. The month before, Nancy Pelosi (news, bio, voting record) was sworn in as the first female speaker of the House of Representatives. Bigger still, Sen. Hillary Clinton " /> Hillary Clinton is the Democratic front-runner for the presidency. In politics and academia, women are finally getting their due. .
Art and culture
The National Art Gallery at Aiwan-e-Rifat, Islamabad, was allocated primarily to the visual art community of Pakistan, back in the 1980s, but not much was done to complete the construction of the building. Now that it is finally complete, the artist community of Pakistan, particularly the visual art community is in outrage. The very first incident that shook the entire community was the change of name from the National Art Gallery to the Centre for Creative Arts. Superficially speaking, a change of name does not do much harm. However, in actuality the change in name damages this buildings function. There has been a seminar, on behalf of the artist community at the Karachi Press Club. It was attended by renowned artists who gave their reasons for rejecting this changed name and discussed the concept of sharing space with performing arts.
