| SERIOUS WITH A SMILE
Just two weeks ago, at a concert in Winfield, Kan., drummer Matt Wilson played on some old pots he found backstage. He has also been known to let his band members do Lord Buckley comedy bits or have them play instruments they don't know how to play very well. He has even been known to do a stage dive. All in the confines of a jazz show. While playing some serious music. Wilson, whose unaffected approach and taking-care-of-business attitude have earned him the trust of giants such as Lee Konitz, Pat Metheny, Dewey Redman and Charlie Haden, says he wants to "welcome people into the moment as much as possible. And humor can be a great vessel for that. People can jump into the pool and be part of the sound." "We're trying to reach people on a lot of levels," he says.
Make a splash at summer camp
Summer camp has gone way beyond spending the day at the public pool, and making endless lanyards out of plastic. For proof, check out the dozens of camps available on the Treasure Coast to serve your child's budding talents. Do you have a child who forces you to recycle, and insists you catch and release that spider in the dining room? Try one of several enviornmental camps. Do you wash more paint off your child's clothes than you do grass stains? Art camp might be the best choice. .
Time is of the essence for students
Fresno Unified's younger students are lagging behind their counterparts in Clovis and Madera -- 18 to 23 days behind.First-, second- and third-graders in the district attend shorter school days than their neighbors on average, according to Fresno Unified administrators. That translates to fewer minutes, hours and weeks of instruction.Because 77% of Fresno Unified's third-graders couldn't read at grade level last year, Superintendent Michael Hanson said those younger students need extra instruction time."How can we justify teaching them fewer hours than children in Madera or Clovis when they are so far behind?" he wrote in an open letter to district employees earlier this month.Fresno Unified teachers in first through third grades now can teach a maximum of 280 minutes per day, under their contract.
Big Trouble in Little Achaemenia
I wonder why I write this, these words won't affect the course or outcome, nonetheless, silent assent is the true crime... So I open my electronic newspapers today, St Georges Day, the Patron Saint of England, even though he was born in what is now Turkey, and equally venerated by the Islamic religion as the Christians, and what do I see?Dire warnings that Al-Quaeda, who have apparently re-located to Iran since the bottom fell out of the property market in Iraq, are planning to unleash Nuclear Weapons upon English Soil. Go elsewhere on-line and I am told that the Iranians have been downloading software from the Palo Verde Nuke plant in Virginia, USA. Go elsewhere and you keep stubbing your toe one ever more snippets of "information" in a similar vein.
Oregon Governor To Live On Food Stamps
(CBS News) SALEM, Oregon Oregon Democratic Gov. Ted Kulongoski and his wife, attorney Mary Oberst, have enough money to get by and meals are generally no problem. But things will be different this week. This is Hunger Awareness Week in Oregon, and for the next seven days, Kulongoski and Oberst will be cutting way back down to the budget one would live on if relying on food stamps a diet they hope others will also follow for a few days to better understand the plight of those who have no choice. They'll spend just $3 a day apiece on their meals, $42 in all, to match the amount spent by the average food stamp recipient in Oregon. "I'm gonna probably go back to what I remember in college, Top Ramen and hot dogs," said Kulongoski. It won't be easy, but the less than bountiful fare is for a cause, reports CBS News correspondent Stephan Kaufman, as Kulongoski begins lobbying Congress against cuts in the food stamp program proposed by the Bush administration.
18:55 Wii Guitar Hero III to feature online content (0)
At one point it looked as if arguably the best rhythm-based videogame of all time was going to bypass Nintendo Wii owners. After the success of the original and its sequel on the PlayStation 2, Guitar Hero leapt straight over to the Microsoft Xbox 360 and thrashed out a successful gig there. Finally, in February this year, publisher Activision announced it would be stepping up its support for the Wii, including a version of Guitar Hero III – and now we learn today, with added online functionality! In an interview with IGN, RedOctane's (co-publisher of Guitar Hero with Activision) co-founder and president Kai Huang confirmed that Guitar Hero III on Wii uses a guitar peripheral and will include online elements: We are really excited about the Wii game because there are so many options for the Wii remote.
