| Magic and Consciousness
The Assn for the Scientific Study of Consciousness announced their 2007 conference, June 22-25. It's being held at the Imperial Palace hotel on the Las Vegas strip, and features a special symposium on The Magic of Consciousness with five top magicians performing and discussing their trade. Just as visual scientists study visual art and illusions to elucidate the workings of the visual system, so too can cognitive scientists study artists of cognitive illusions to elucidate the underpinnings of cognition. Stage magic shows are the manifestation of the deep intuition and understanding of human attention and awareness held by the accomplished magical performer. By studying magicians, and learning their techniques, researchers can hope to learn the skills necessary to manipulate attention and awareness in the lab, at a quantitative level.

European Parliament Report - Committee on Petitions - on the fact ...
The Petitions Committee remains concerned and deeply troubled as a result of the persistent and long-standing denial of the legitimate rights of many European citizens in Spain, most notably in the Valencian Region, to their land and their homes. They have become the collateral victims of many rampant urbanisation programmes founded upon legislation which provides privilege and wealth for the urbaniser and which denies individuals their very integrity. In a large number of documented cases town councils have concocted urban development plans less because of their real requirements related to population growth and tourism, more because of what often appears as their greed and avarice. Hardly a day goes by without news of another mayor, or town councillor, who is investigated or charged concerning allegations of corruption related to urbanisation programmes.
Kazakh leader urges nation to speak Russian
ASTANA: Kazakh leader Nursultan Nazarbayev has criticised his former Soviet nation for growing disrespect for the Russian language. Nazarbayevs remarks were in sharp contrast to a broader trend among Central Asian leaders seeking to stop the lingering dominance of the Russian language. I think its a great blessing that Kazakhs speak Russian so well - better than some Russians, Nazarbayev said at a meeting with young scientists late on Tuesday. Some of our people, intelligentsia, criticise that we use Russian so much ... The more languages you know the more cultured you become, he said. Turkic-speaking Kazakhs were forced to learn Russian during Russian imperial rule and later under Soviet power. But since independence in 1991, the Central Asian state has sought to revive the Kazakh language as a symbol of national identity.
