Calligraphy, Mandarin lure Korean painter

Artist Hoon Choi uses traditional Korean tools to paint modern images in a style he is still trying to identify. Kate Chapman catches up with him to discuss the calligraphy and Mandarin class that landed him in Shanghai. Unless you are Asian you probably would not think Hoon Choi was an expat if you met him on the street, he blends in with the throngs of Chinese people. But Choi moved to Shanghai almost a year and a half ago from his native South Korea. A painter and exhibition curator, Choi enrolled in a calligraphy course in his home country and began to incorporate calligraphy into his paintings. The course focused on Korean and Chinese calligraphy. "I could paint Chinese calligraphy very beautifully, but I didn't know what it meant," says Choi who has been learning Mandarin since arriving in China.

Tokyo Sends An Official Review for Spider-Man 3

I don't want to build up the hype train too much for Spider-Man 3, but hearing two fans rave about the film and then having an official report to back them up is hard to pass up.

Spider-Man 3 Screening Report
The screening reports yesterday claimed that Spider-Man 3 was the best Spidy installment yet. Things were off to a good start, but sometimes fans can get a bit over-excited. Fortunately, the official press is beginning to announce their own opinions of the third Spider-Man installment and they so far agree.

Reuters delivers a report straight from Tokyo:

"Spider-Man 3" is packed with stunning special effects such as the crumbling, morphing Sandman and an evil black suit that brings out a person's dark side, but the characters also show a psychological complexity rarely seen in action movies.

Street Smarts SM : Something ventured, something gained By Dee ...

Editor's note: After a year of contributions, Michael Nardy's final Street Smarts article appeared in the March 26, 2007 issue of The Green Sheet. Beginning in this issue, and continuing for one year, Dee Karawadra of Impact PaySystem is authoring the column.

remember the day I learned of The Green Sheet. I was green myself, having been in the business only a couple of months. I had managed to sign up a few merchants, but I didn't know the difference between a Tranz 330 and Zon Jr.

My wife, Emily, worked for Concord EFS at the time. One of her colleagues mentioned the magazine. I assumed it was a costly, subscription-based publication.

A few years later, a recruiter for another ISO called me. He'd received my business card from one of my merchants, and he wanted me to join his company as an employee.

Ubisoft Announces Jam Sessions Guitar Title for Nintendo DS

Today Ubisoft announced that Jam Sessions, a groundbreaking music title exclusively for the Nintendo DS in which players actually strum a guitar via the Touch Screen to make music, will launch in EMEA territories this summer.

"Jam Sessions is an amazing title with limitless potential to entertain and engage a wide audience of people who love music, guitar and singing," said John Parks, EMEA Marketing Director. "Basically, it’s a guitar in your pocket but that’s just the beginning. It’s a chance for people who have never thought of themselves as ‘musically inclined’ to jump right in and play through entire songs, compose their own music and sing along with friends."

Players will rock out, or smoothly strum, on the lower screen of the Nintendo DS system, producing an authentic sound digitally remastered from an actual acoustic guitar.

Comments, corrections, clarifications, and c*ckups

John Goldbaum writes: Re. "John Howard turns climate pessimist" (Friday, item 3). John Howard says "we should all pray for rain" but we did that on the national day of prayer on 26 November and it didn't work. Perhaps we didn't pray hard enough or maybe the gods are angry with us but I think, just like Iraq, we now need a new Government policy.

Senators out to shake 'choking dog' label in series against Penguins

OTTAWA (CP) - In a playoff series that should feature plenty of offence, Ottawa coach Bryan Murray went on the attack Monday against the critics who dismiss his Senators as chronic underachievers.

As the Senators prepared to meet the Pittsburgh Penguins in the opening round of the Eastern Conference post-season beginning Wednesday, Murray's first order of business was to address the "choking dog" brush - his words - that he's sick of seeing his team painted with.

"I think it's bullshit," Murray snorted following the team's practice.

While it's the 10th straight season the Senators have qualified for the playoffs, they've advanced beyond the second round just once in their history.

And against a Penguins team that features some of the NHL's brightest young talents, including league scoring champ Sidney Crosby, they're once again dealing with the same old questions over whether they'll be able to translate another strong regular season into playoff success.
